It’s nice to see this once-prolific titan of the eastern forest: American Chestnut (Castanea dentata). Although the chestnut blight killed the above-ground portion of these long-ago giants, root systems of American chestnut trees can persist and live on for a century, sending up new sprouts that can thrive for several years and replenish their root system’s resources, under mature hardwoods stands.

This northwestern Pennsylvania ridge top oak stand was loaded with understory chestnut sprouts.
