Under the shade of an American Chestnut tree: this recently-completed improvement-and-release thinning on a private landowner’s woodland in Elk County, PA hosts an ample cohort of oak seedlings and saplings, thanks to the hard work and patience of several previous foresters over the years. Overhead, an uncommonly-healthy American chestnut offers the right combination of shelter, shade, and dappled sunlight to help develop the future’s oak forest.
