Porcupine — Slow moving and common to our Big Woods

Our common porcupine making its way to a local den tree. Slow moving and common to our Big Woods region of northcentral Pennsylvania, we’re so used to seeing a few of them each year that we might think they’re common all over the state. But, you likely won’t find them in the less-forested southeastern portion of the state, given their need for vast forest habitats and their relatively low reproductive rate.

Many rural residents are well acquainted with the porcupine’s need for salt and minerals in their diet during the winter season, as illustrated in the two photos, below.
