The following six charts illustrate the recent improvement we’ve observed, along with historical price trends for hardwood timber stumpage, using data from Pennsylvania University’s quarterly Timber Market Report. Their most recent Penn State report is dated “Second Quarter, 2024”. While several species are featured in the report, we’ve focused on the six with the largest commercial impact on our region’s solid wood products industry. We noted the following regional and species trends:
- Quarter-over-quarter prices increased for most commercially important species in all four quadrants of the state, with the exception of yellow-poplar in the northeast, and both red and white oak in the southwest.
- Year-over-year (YOY) prices increased sharply for many of the important species in the northeastern and southwestern quadrants of the Commonwealth.
- YOY price movements were mixed in the southeastern and northwestern portions of Pennsylvania.
- The long-term trend for white oak, soft maple and yellow-poplar has been generally upward, while the long-term trend for other species (red oak, cherry and hard maple) are mixed.
Please keep in mind, the value of your unique stand of timber may differ widely from these multi-county averages. Pricing for your specific property’s timber is subject to ever-changing, highly-localized markets.
